VILLAGE LOCKDOWN
During the coronavirus crisis of 2020, we understandably saw extensive photo-reportage from Britain’s big cities. Images of empty public spaces appeared everywhere. But there is an overlooked side to the story also. As a photographer, I felt a responsibility to continue to document as much as I could during my daily walk around my local village and occasionally, just outside.
Village Lockdown documents life in and around Llandegfan, a small, rural village on the Isle of Anglesey/Ynys Môn, North Wales. The series depicts isolation, community spirit and people brought together despite separation.
The enforced intimacy with my surroundings allowed me a new appreciation of the previously overlooked or banal. Always a sociable community, new friendships have been forged from opposite sides of the road.
The process of creating and sharing work has always been an important part of my general wellbeing and never more so during this difficult period. These images will hopefully have a lasting legacy as we look back on an extraordinary period of village lockdown. A copy is included in the national collection in the National Library of Wales.
